Training across Canada: April 9/10 2022

 Hospitalero Training
April 9 & 10, 2022
via Zoom & in person

Thank you for your interest in training to be a hospitalero/a.  We have decided to resume training after a two year pause due to Covid. We will offer a hybrid training program as follows: individual training sites with introductions on Zoom. This will be followed by two Zoom sessions (perhaps 3 hours each) on April 9 and 10th. Since these will be offered across the country at the same time, we will begin in BC at 8am, Ontario at 11am, etc. The final session will be a day long program when and where it is safe to do so across the country, as spring will allow more outdoor, safe settings.

Although this will be quite different than our usual weekend in person trainings, we guarantee that it will be a weekend of fun, learning, and reinforcement of all those things you learned and felt on the Camino. You will have great fun reliving the Camino!

Please complete this form and return it with a cheque or etransfer for $50.00 or your donativo (what you feel you can afford) payable to Mary Virtue, 78 Linden Ave., Victoria, BC V8V4C8.  Any money left after the expenses (course materials, postage etc.) for the weekend will be donated to an albergue or hospitaleros voluntarios which staffs many albergues on the Camino.

Any food restrictions we should be aware of?

When did you walk/cycle the Camino?   Month and year(s) please.

Why do you want to be a hospitalero/a?

Are you prepared to volunteer for 15 days in 2022 or 2023? (The Federation assigns volunteers from the 1st to the 15th of the month of the 16th to 30th/31st . You should show up a day early to “learn the ropes” and for a smooth transition at the albergue.)

Experienced hospitaleros will be conducting the training and will be there as a group for the Zoom section. They are: Tom Friesen (London, ON), Daphne Hnutiak (Vancouver), Mary Virtue (Victoria), Dori Antolin (Toronto) and Monique Rigole (Calgary). If you have any questions, after you have read over the FAQs, please email Tom.

  6. Hello. I walked the Camino Frances in 2021 and am interested in being a hospitalera. I am a member of the Canadian Company of Pilgrims and also of the Quebec group du Quebec a Compostelle. There does not seem to be training here in Montreal this year and I would be willing to come to Ottawa for in person training days. Would I be admitted to the sessions. I am fluent in French and Modern Greek and my Spanish is improving as I am taking courses. I am an Anglophone and would be more comfortable taking the hospitalero course in English. Thanks for considering me. In fact, in Leon, the hospitalera actively encouraged me to try to become a hospitalera!

  7. It looks like you are from Montreal. You would be closer to the training that is offered in Ontario. Check with Tom Friesen to see if there still are training spaces available. tomfriesen@hotmail.com

  8. I am very interested in serving in a donativo in Spain. I have walked the Norte, Primitivo, Portuguese Coastal and the San Salvador, staying in albergues and hostels as much as possible. I am working very hard on my Spanish, but it is a work in progress. I plan to return to Spain this fall to walk other Caminos and would love to have the opportunity to serve other pilgrims. I have been reading thru the blog and am somewhat confused as this seems to be a complicated process. 1/ how do I sign up for the London training (I live in Kitchener and am a member of the Company here) 2/ what are the contacts for placements in Spain? Thank you.
